Using Crease

By using Crease you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you don't agree, please don't use it.

  • Crease is offered in the United States. You must be at least 13. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must agree to these terms for you.
  • If you use Crease for an organization, you confirm you're allowed to accept these terms for it.
  • An account is optional. You need one for friends, clubs and plans.
  • Keep your sign-in details safe, and give us a real email address. You are responsible for what happens on your account.
  • You can delete your account in the app at any time.

Your books

Crease reads files you already have. Only import books and audio you are allowed to have and use.

Don't use Crease to get around copy protection, share books you don't have the right to share, or infringe anyone's copyright.

Some books are free classics from our catalog. Those are offered as they are.

AI narration

Some read-aloud voices in Crease are generated by AI, not recorded by people. They can mispronounce words or misread a passage. Don't use them, or audio made with them, to pass off speech as a real person's.

Your content

Notes, replies, voice notes and anything else you share are yours. By sharing them you give Crease a limited licence to store them, check them for safety and deliver them to the friend or club you chose. We don't use them for anything else.

Shared text and voice notes are checked for abuse before they are delivered. See the privacy policy for details.

Only share what you have the right to share.

Clubs and community

Crease is for thoughtful reading with people you choose. Please don't:

  • Harass, bully, stalk or threaten anyone.
  • Attack people for who they are, or share sexual or exploitative content.
  • Share someone's private information without permission.
  • Send spam, scams or malware, or pretend to be someone else.
  • Share illegal content or content you don't have the right to share.

Mark likely spoilers and respect a club's reading pace.

Hosts and members

Club hosts set up and look after their clubs. Members follow the club's rules as well as these terms. Clubs are private, which means access-controlled. It does not mean end-to-end encrypted.

Reports and moderation

You can report notes, replies, accounts and clubs, and block other readers. We may remove content, warn an account, limit access, or suspend or end an account that breaks these terms. We keep evidence where the law requires it.

Appeals

If we remove your content or limit your account and you think we got it wrong, write to [email protected] within 30 days with “Appeal” in the subject line. Someone who wasn't part of the first decision will look again, and we'll reply within 14 days.

Plans, trials and billing

Reading, listening and joining clubs are free. Reader and Social are paid plans with extra clubs, stats and storage. Current prices are on the pricing page.

How you pay

Subscriptions are sold on this website through Paddle, our merchant of record. Paddle is the seller. It takes payment, adds tax where it applies and handles refunds. Prices are in US dollars. One plan works on every device you use with your account.

Renewal and cancelling

  • A paid plan renews automatically each month or year, at the price shown when you subscribed, until you cancel. Paddle charges the payment method you gave it at the start of each period.
  • You can cancel anytime: through the link in any Paddle receipt, or by writing to [email protected]. Cancelling stops the next renewal. You keep the plan until the end of the period you paid for.
  • If we change the price of your plan, we'll email you at least 30 days before the new price applies, so you can cancel first.

Free trials

Reader and Social have a 14-day free trial. It needs no card, there is one per account, and it never turns into a paid plan on its own. When it ends, your account goes back to the plan you had before.

Downgrading

If your plan changes, you keep as many clubs as the new plan allows. The rest are paused, not deleted. Members can still read a paused club. Subscribing again brings everything back.

Refunds

You can get a full refund within 14 days of any charge, whether it's your first payment or a renewal. Ask through the link in your Paddle receipt, or write to [email protected]. Paddle sends the money back to the payment method you used. After a refund, your plan ends and your account goes back to Free.

After 14 days, payments are not refundable, except where the law says otherwise.

The beta

Crease is in beta. Features can change, break or go away, and the service can be down at times. We do our best to look after your data, but a beta comes without promises.

Your data on your device

Your books, notes and highlights live on your device. If you delete the app, clear its storage or lose the device, they can be lost. Keep your own copies of anything you can't replace.

Copyright complaints

We respond to notices under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). If you believe something on Crease infringes your copyright, send our copyright agent a notice that includes:

  • Your physical or electronic signature.
  • The copyrighted work you believe was infringed.
  • The material on Crease you want removed, with enough detail for us to find it.
  • Your name, address, phone number and email address.
  • A statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law.
  • A statement, under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and that you are the owner or allowed to act for the owner.

Copyright agent: Crease LLC, Attn: Copyright Agent, [email protected], 418 Broadway, Ste N, Albany, NY 12207.

If your content was removed and you believe that was a mistake, you can send a counter-notice to the same address. We end the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe.

Ending your account

You can stop using Crease and delete your account whenever you like. We may suspend or end an account that breaks these terms or puts others at risk. Where we can, we'll tell you why.

Warranty and liability

Crease is provided “as is” and “as available”. We don't promise that it will always work, be free of errors, or suit every file or book. How a book looks can vary by publisher and format.

To the extent the law allows, Crease is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for loss of data that you keep on your device. Our total liability for any claim about Crease is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and $50. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have by law that can't be limited.

If you break these terms or the law and someone makes a claim against Crease because of it, you agree to cover our reasonable losses and costs from that claim.

Disputes and governing law

If you have a problem with Crease, please write to us first. Most things can be sorted out that way.

New York law governs these terms, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute goes to the state or federal courts in New York County, New York, and you and Crease agree to those courts. Either of us can use small claims court instead where it qualifies.

The rest

  • These terms and the privacy policy are the whole agreement between you and Crease about the service.
  • If part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
  • If we don't enforce a term straight away, we haven't given up the right to.
  • You can't transfer these terms to someone else. We can transfer them if Crease is sold or reorganized.
  • Don't use Crease where US sanctions or export laws forbid it.
  • We want Crease to work for everyone. If something in the app or on this site is hard to use with assistive technology, write to us and we'll help.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change is material, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. If you keep using Crease after that, you accept the new terms. The date at the top of this page shows the latest version.
